Nepal Workshop on Financial Risk Mitigation in Power Purchase Agreements

On January 24-25, CLDP held a workshop in Kathmandu for officials from the Ministry of Energy, Nepal Investment Board, Office of the Millennium Challenge, Nepal Electricity Authority and the Ministry of Finance and other energy-related agencies on currency risk and volatility in the cross-border power trading context. The workshop focused on currency risk and volatility as it affects power purchase agreements and solutions for mitigating currency risk and attracting foreign investment. The workshop is part of the Department of State's Indo-Pacific Economic Corridor Initiative aimed at increasing cross-border investment in energy and power trading in South Asia.

Afghanistan: Consultation on Implementation of Afghanistan's WTO Committments

CLDP, in cooperation with the WTO Secretariat and the International Trade Centre, held a consultation in Geneva to assist the Government of Afghanistan in developing the knowledge and expertise to implement its trade commitments, to participate as an active member, and to fully realize the benefits of its recent WTO membership.

On December 19-23, 2016, CLDP will conducted a workshop on e-procurement and ADR Phase II in Kiev, Ukraine for 15 members of the Afghan National Procurement Authority (NPA) staff.

CLDP, in partnership with the International Finance Corporation, trained Afghan commercial court judges and officials from the Ministry of Justice on the newly reformed Movable and Immovable Property Laws on December 14-17, 2016.

Liquefied Natural Gas Import Contracts Workshop

On December 6 and 7, CLDP conducted a workshop in Naypyitaw for senior Burmese energy officials from the Ministry of Energy and Electricity on developing a legal and regulatory framework for the import of LNG (liquefied natural gas).  The workshop sought to assist Burma to better understand LNG import projects and how best to balance imports with use of existing domestic natural gas reserves in meeting the country’s rapidly growing electricity demand.

CLDP held a telecom regulations training in Washington, DC on December 1-2 and trainings at the UN Internet Governance Forum in Guadalajara, Mexico on December 5-9 for Afghans and Pakistanis from the public and private telecom sectors.

Unleashing Sri Lanka's Trade Potential

From November 29-December 1, the U.S. Department of State, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Sri Lanka Department of Commerce held three seminars on trade policy with more than 70 key decision makers and technical experts from various Sri Lankan ministries, agencies, research institutes, trade policy think tanks, and Chambers of Commerce.

“Sri Lanka can count on the United States as a partner to help unleash the trade potential of Sri Lankan companies,” said U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Atul Keshap.

Sessions over the three days covered skills development in quantitative trade policy analysis, a discussion of trade negotiation strategies, and a discussion of the potential for formulation of a Sri Lanka national trade policy.

“It’s nice to be surrounded by friendly faces as we have similar jobs, struggle with the same challenges and realize the value of trade,” said Katrice Kelly, Team Lead for Negotiations at the U.S. Department of Commerce at the International Trade Administration.

The three-day seminar also included experts from the U.S. International Trade Administration Office of Trade Negotiations and Analysis, the International Trade Centre (ITC), and World Bank.  Sessions covered resources for market analysis, economic modeling, trade strategy development, and public-private cooperation.

“As public servants we’re committed to continual learning and consulting all stakeholders in formulating trade policy,” said Sonali Wijeratne, the Director General of the Sri Lanka Department of Commerce.
