The Maldives: CLDP Leads Workshops on Arbitration and Mediation

August 21, 2019

On August 21, 2019, in Tunis, Tunisia, CLDP led a workshop on technical aspects of successfully exporting handicrafts for 100 local small and medium-sized enterprises that produce artisanal products. The exercise included guidance on design for foreign markets, interaction with professional buyers, customer service, contract negotiations, and procedural aspects of shipping and customs clearance. This is part of a multi-year year effort to assist Tunisia in increasing handicraft exports through recommendations based on international best practices. Artisans represent the second largest employment sector, after agriculture, with 350,000 jobs in Tunisia. They are often located in remote areas where the local population is more susceptible to radicalization if unemployed. This type of traditional work has proven an effective economic development tool for the less educated and less mobile rural populations. Since CLDP’s effort started, handicraft exports to the U.S. have tripled.
