Central Asia-Afghanistan Regional Expert Level Working Group on SPS

As part of the U.S. government’s objective to promote economic expansion and stability in Afghanistan and Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan) region, CLDP has been supporting the implementation of regional working groups on Customs, Sanitary and Phytosanitary measures, and Standards. CLDP is organizing the Sixth Meeting of the Central Asia-Afghanistan Regional Expert Level Working Group on SPS Issues to take place in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on March 14-16, 2018. The Meeting will further the Group’s objective of promoting a coordinated and collaborative approach to solving SPS issues in the region in a timely manner, including by fostering increased knowledge of regional and international SPS principles and practices. The workshop will review and take up the results of the December 2017 meeting of the U.S.-Central Asia Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) Council, including furthering the Group’s previous discussions of a regional network of reference and testing laboratories as well as continuing the Group’s work on regional approaches to previously identified pests and diseases. The Group will review the results of ongoing regional work and discussions of green corridors for agricultural products. Lastly, meeting in Almaty, Kazakhstan, will provide the Group an opportunity to tour state of the art laboratory facilities.
