CLDP to Facilitate the Sixth Meeting of the Central Asia-Afghanistan Expert Level Working Group on Standards in Tbilisi, Georgia

June 6, 2018 - June 8, 2018

As part of the U.S. government’s objective to promote economic expansion and stability in Afghanistan and Central Asia (Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan), CLDP has been facilitating regional working groups on Customs, Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, and Standards. CLDP is organizing the Sixth Meeting of the Central Asia-Afghanistan Expert Level Working Group on Standards to take place in Tbilisi, Georgia on June 6-8, 2018.

The Meeting will further the Group’s objective of promoting a coordinated and collaborative approach to solving trade-related standards/technical regulation issues in the region, including by fostering increased knowledge of regional and international principles and practices, in order to facilitate fair and safe trade. The workshop will also review and take up the results of the December 2017 meeting of the U.S.-Central Asia Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) Council, including furthering the Group’s previous work toward investigating and recommending opportunities for facilitating trade through the harmonization or mutual recognition of standards setting, technical regulation development, conformity assessment, certification, and accreditation rules and procedures in the region. The Group will continue to examine the benefits of regional coordination of efforts to eliminate lead in paint and will develop a work plan for implementing the TIFA recommendation regarding seeking opportunities to develop, strengthen, and inform laboratory accreditation in the region and increase the number of accredited facilities.

Meeting in Tbilisi provided the Group an opportunity to learn from Georgia’s post-Soviet standards/technical regulations reforms. Site visits in Tbilisi allowed the group to observe efforts to promote energy efficiency and use of renewable energy at the international airport and to observe a laboratory for certification of road construction materials.
