CLDP to Support IP Moot Court

CLDP, in collaboration with the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia ‘Sakpatenti’ and the European Law Students’ Association, will facilitate a training session on international best practices in trademark enforcement for a moot court on intellectual property law.  The moot court program is aimed to train Georgian students at the university level on basic concepts in intellectual property and to develop their oral advocacy skills.

CLDP to Host First Meeting of Regional Intellectual Property Working Group

CLDP will partner with the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia ‘Sakpatenti’ to bring together through a virtual platform of government officials from the Caucasus Region and Eastern Europe for the first meeting of the Caucasus Expert Level Working Group on Intellectual Property Rights. The working group will identify mutual challenges for the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights and develop recommendations for regional cooperation.

Central Asia: CLDP Leads U.S.-Central Asia TIFA Working Groups Session

On Monday, March 29, 2021, CLDP led the working group session of the U.S.-Central Asia Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) Council meeting. CLDP reported on the work of its Expert Level Working Groups on Customs, Women’s Economic Empowerment, Sanitary/Phytosanitary Measures, and Intellectual Property Rights. The TIFA Working Groups unanimously adopted CLDP’s recommended focus areas and projects for the current year. As approved at the meeting, CLDP will begin facilitating a new regional Digital Trade Working Group. Despite recent improvements, the Central Asian region remains one of the least integrated regions globally. By assisting the governments of Central Asia to collaborate on fair, trade-focused, and transparent rules and procedures, the CLDP-facilitated Expert Level Working Groups can contribute to their efforts to mitigate the pandemic’s effects, expand regional and global trade, and promote market access.

CLDP hosted Videoconference on Technology Transfer

CLDP, in coordination with the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan, held a videoconference with a multi-stakeholder group of government officials and private sector leaders to discuss technology transfer capacity and the potential for commercialization of intellectual property at universities and research institutions in Armenia.  The videoconference highlighted the progress of a group of university and legal professionals in establishing a technology transfer office in Armenia following their participation in CLDP-led technical assistance programs on technology transfer in 2017 and 2018.  Technology transfer and commercialization of intellectual property promote innovation and economic development and create opportunities for future research and development partnerships with American institutions.

Technology Transfer Conference

CLDP, in close cooperation with the Sri Lanka Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), sponsored 21 managers from University Business Linkage offices (UBL cells) to virtually attend the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) 2021 Annual Meeting and Conference. The AUTM conference is the world’s largest gathering of technology transfer professionals.  The conference was structured to be highly interactive, with program sessions focused on learning, networking, and deal-making with over 1,500 professionals from 20 different countries and the leading universities around the world. Some of the topics covered included drafting and negotiating intellectual property (IP) license agreements, industry – academic partnerships, innovation strategies, administration of technology transfer offices, the “nuts and bolts” of technology transfer, IP trends and successful practices, innovation focusing on agriculture, and proof of concept and early stage technologies. This program continues to build on programs conducted by CLDP with MoHE and others, to establish and enhance UBL cells at public and private universities across Sri Lanka, all of which play a key role in creating and maintaining an ecosystem of innovation and contribute to the strengthening of Sri Lanka’s IP rights enforcement regime.

CLDP in close collaboration with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will train Bahrain Innovation and Technology Center (BITC) staff regarding filing patents in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council)

CLDP held Consultation on Collective Management

On March 15-18, CLDP, in cooperation with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), led a virtual consultation on the collective management framework in Georgia.  The program was attended by representative of Sakpatenti and other IP stakeholders.  During the program, experts from the USPTO, WIPO, and international collective management organizations presented and led discussions on best practices in collective management.  CLDP moderated a discussion on the current state of collective management in Georgia that assisted Sakpatenti and other IP stakeholders to identify gaps in the legal and institutional framework and to develop a roadmap for strengthening current legislation to remove ambiguity and implementing new institutional mechanisms that reinforce the legal obligations of CMOs.

BiH: CLDP Trains Judges and Attorneys on Criminal Intellectual Property Adjudication

On March 10th, CLDP hosted a webinar in partnership with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Centers for Judicial and Prosecutorial Training in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska, on aspects of criminal IP adjudication including why IP are sometimes prosecuted, and what kinds of IP crimes are prosecuted.

Central Asia Regional Expert Level Working Group on Intellectual Property Rights Webinar: Interagency Coordination for the Protection and Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights

CLDP in partnership with the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center, USTR, and USPTO hosted a Webinar for Central Asia Regional Expert Level Working Group on Intellectual Property Rights on the Interagency Coordination for the Protection and Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights. The Webinar was a part of a series of virtual and hybrid meetings/workshops that will take place in 2021, culminating in a U.S. based Consultative Visit of the Central Asia Regional Expert Level Working Group on Intellectual Property Rights to take place after COVID-19 travel restrictions are lifted.
