Support for Asia-Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum

From September 27 through 29, 2020, CLDP will support participation by South Asian government and non-government stakeholders at the now-virtual Asia-Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum (APrIGF). This is a regional event consistent with the global IGFs held annually by the United Nations.  Multiple virtual workshops and plenary sessions will offer platforms for discussions of such Internet Governance issues such as access, openness, and data regulation. CLDP will provide standalone discussions of issues of interest to the South Asian participants and will also provide some technical support to the operation of the forum.  This activity is part of CLDP’s work under the Department of State’s Digital Connectivity and Cybersecurity Partnership (DCCP).  DCCP supports increased access to communications, an open, interoperable, and secure Internet, transparent regulatory policies for open competitive markets, and trade opportunities for U.S. firms.  DCCP also builds partners nations’ capacity to address shared security threats, along with capacity building and commercial engagement activities.

South Asia Participation at Prague 5G Wireless Security Conference

In mid-September, 2020, CLDP will support participation by several South Asian government and non-government stakeholders to the second conference on 5G Security hosted by the Government of Czechia.  This program is currently scheduled to take place in person in Prague, but it may become a virtual event. CLDP will hold thi sprogram under the Department of State’s Digital Connectivity and Cybersecurity Partnership (DCCP), which supports increased access to communications, an open, interoperable, and secure Internet, transparent regulatory policies for open competitive markets, and trade opportunities for U.S. firms.  DCCP also builds partners nations’ capacity to address shared security threats, along with capacity building and commercial engagement activities.

On April 25 and 26, CLDP in partnership with SARI-E, hosted participants from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka to discuss the development of governance structures for a regional market.

South Asia: CLDP Leads Study Tour on Competitive Power Market

From May 7-11, in coordination with the South Africa Department of Energy’s Independent Power Producer (IPP) Office, CLDP led a study tour for delegates from five South Asian countries to Johannesburg and Pretoria to learn about South Africa’s competitive power market and cross-border energy trading in the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP).

Afghanistan Bankruptcy Law Workshop

On June 15-17, CLDP led a workshop in New Delhi, India on Afghanistan’s draft Bankruptcy Law for officials of the Afghan Ministry of Commerce and Industries (MoCI) and Ministry of Justice (MoJ), as well as members of parliament.

India Shale Gas Consultations

 
On April 2 and 3, CLDP led a two-day workshop on shale gas implementing regulations in New Delhi, India, as a follow-up to a January visit to the United States for consultations with regulatory authorities by senior officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG), Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) and the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MOEF).

CLDP continues to assist the Government of India Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG) in developing a regulatory and fiscal regime conducive to foreign direct investment in exploration for, and production of, shale gas.

CLDP Celebrates 20 years!

Begun as a small joint venture between USAID and Commerce to help the Former Soviet Bloc countries of Eastern Europe transition to more market-oriented economies, CLDP has expanded to help meet the legal technical assistance needs of more than 50 countries in Eurasia, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. On February 23rd, CLDP celebrated 20 years of technical assistance in commercial law.
