CLDP Global Vis Moot Phase Four Virtual or In-Person

CLDP, in collaboration with UNCITRAL and the University of Pittsburgh's Center for International Legal Education (CILE), will support over 20 teams compete in the 29th Annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Moot in Vienna and in the 18th Vis East Moot in April 2021.

Afghanistan and Sri Lanka: Government Officials Participate in Trade and WTO Law Certificate Course

From March 22 to 26, CLDP sponsored the attendance of twelve government officials from Afghanistan and two government officials from Sri Lanka to participate in the Institute of International Economic Law’s virtual certificate course at Georgetown University.

Technology Transfer Conference

CLDP, in close cooperation with the Sri Lanka Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), sponsored 21 managers from University Business Linkage offices (UBL cells) to virtually attend the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) 2021 Annual Meeting and Conference. The AUTM conference is the world’s largest gathering of technology transfer professionals.  The conference was structured to be highly interactive, with program sessions focused on learning, networking, and deal-making with over 1,500 professionals from 20 different countries and the leading universities around the world. Some of the topics covered included drafting and negotiating intellectual property (IP) license agreements, industry – academic partnerships, innovation strategies, administration of technology transfer offices, the “nuts and bolts” of technology transfer, IP trends and successful practices, innovation focusing on agriculture, and proof of concept and early stage technologies. This program continues to build on programs conducted by CLDP with MoHE and others, to establish and enhance UBL cells at public and private universities across Sri Lanka, all of which play a key role in creating and maintaining an ecosystem of innovation and contribute to the strengthening of Sri Lanka’s IP rights enforcement regime.

Global: CLDP Hosts Pre-Moot on International Commercial Arbitration

On February 21-27, CLDP, in cooperation with the Bahrain Chamber for Dispute Resolution (BCDR) and the University of Pittsburgh Center for International Legal Education, virtually hosted the 11th annual Middle East Vis Pre-Moot. The Pre-Moot is an extensive competition preparing students, lawyers, and law faculty for their participation in the 28th annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot)—the world's premier legal educational program for improving contract resolution through arbitration. The Pre-Moot aims to expand the Vis Moot to underrepresented regions and enhance contract enforcement mechanisms globally. This year, the virtual Pre-Moot brought together over 180 students from 40 teams from the Middle East, Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, North and South America, and Europe and over 200 arbitrators. Global: CLDP Holds Weekly Sessions for Vis Moot Teams

CLDP, in partnership with the Center for International Legal Education (CILE) at the University of Pittsburgh, is holding a legal writing curriculum on for teams competing in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot). The Vis Moot is a global legal competition, established by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, to spur the practice of international commercial arbitration and build the capacity of the next generation of lawyers in the field. The CLDP Vis Pre-Moot program has been implemented annually since 2006 to expand the Vis Moot to countries in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia that are developing their alternative dispute resolution legal capacity. From November 9 to January 22, over 28 teams will work on legal memoranda for the 2020 Vis Moot Problem. CLDP and CILE will support teams by arranging weekly office hours with renowned professors of arbitration as well as weekly live feedback sessions on draft briefs from Vis Advisors, most of whom are former graduates of previous CLDP Vis Pre-Moot Program. Through these virtual consultations, teams will have dedicated support and access to on-demand virtual resources that are critical to their participation and success in the Vis Moot.

Global: CLDP Provides Virtual Training on Commercial Arbitration for Law Schools - eVis Pre-Moot Training

From October 19-23, CLDP, in partnership with the Center for International Legal Education of the University of Pittsburgh, the Bahrain Chamber for Dispute Resolution, and other regional partners, initiated a week-long legal analysis course for teams from the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. The 28th Annual Middle East Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot) is an UNCITRAL-founded educational platform used to develop the practice of international commercial arbitration by engaging law students, lawyers, judges, and arbitrators in mock trials. With support from CLDP, teams participate in an extensive 9-month program dedicated to ensuring successful competition and representation in the Vis Moot. Following a course on arbitration last month, the teams worked with global advisors through virtual sessions and interactive discussions to develop their respective written submissions for the Vis Moot, while also networking with teams from other law schools to trade tips and resources. The program showcases how to incorporate virtual education, share experiences, and develop best practices on international commercial arbitration.

Sri Lanka: CLDP Hosts the annual Sri Lankan National Selection Rounds for the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot

The Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) in partnership with the Moot Court Bench,held its annual Sri Lankan National Selection Rounds for the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot on the 27th of September 2020 at the Hilton Colombo Residences.

The Moot Court Bench is an initiative created in collaboration with CLDP to develop alternate dispute resolution mechanisms in Sri Lanka with special emphasis on Arbitration and Commercial Law. To date, the program has successfully trained over 40 selected law students over 3 years and recently expanded its capacity to accommodate over 60 students per sitting earlier this year. This event marked the culmination of 3 months of hard work and dedication by both the mooties and the administrative departments of the Moot Court Bench.
The highlight of the National Rounds was the Grand Finale between the top two teams in the program, from the Royal Institute of Colombo and Sri Lanka Law College.
The Arbitral Tribunal for the finale comprised of Former Justice Shiranee Tilakawardana, Dr Asanga Gunawansa and Mr Viraj Dayaratne, PC.
Sri Lanka Law College emerged the Champions for the year 2020, pleading on behalf of the Respondent and the Royal Institute of Colombo, pleading on behalf of the Claimant were awarded the runners-up.
Amani Raji, from the Royal Institute of Colombo, was adjudged the Best Oralist for her outstanding advocacy skills.
