From September 17-18, 2019, CLDP facilitated the participation of judicial delegations from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain in the 10th Annual International Association for Court Administration’s (IACA) conference in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.

Tbilisi, Georgia: CLDP Organizes Sub-regional Workshop to Further Work on Lead Paint Initiative

On September 10-11, 2019, in Tbilisi, Georgia, CLDP led a sub-regional workshop highlighting best practices in developing laws to restrict lead in paint. The workshop brought together officials from the CLDP-facilitated Central Asia Expert Level Working Group on Standards with their counterparts in Central Asian and Georgian Ministries of Health and Ministries of the Environment, as well as with advisors from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the World Health Organization (WHO), American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA-ROLI), and non-governmental organizations (NGOS) from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Ukraine.

Delegates from Competition Agency of Georgia Participate in the Annual FTC-Eastern European Competition Workshop

On September 11-12, 2019, CLDP sponsored the participation of two delegates from the Competition Agency of Georgia to attend the Annual FTC-Eastern European Competition Workshop held in Budapest, Hungary.  The workshop is designed to build the capacity of participating competition agencies through presentations and topical case studies.

Central Asia – CLDP Facilitates Intellectual Property Office Administration Training

On August 5-8, 2019, CLDP supported the participation of a delegate from the State Service of Intellectual Property and Innovation, Krygyz Republic, and the Kazakh Patent Agency in a Trademarks IP Office Administration training, hosted by the USPTO in Alexandria, Virginia.

Central Asia: Trademark Examination Workshop

On July 25-26, 2019 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and on July 28-29, 2019 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, CLDP facilitated trainings on trademark examinations and registrations, conducted by advisors from the US Patent and Trademark Office. Participants included officials from Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and the Kyrgyz Republic.

Georgia: CLDP Conducts Judicial Workshop on Intellectual Property

On July 20-21, 2019, in Batumi, CLDP held a workshop on the adjudication of civil intellectual property infringement cases. Thirty-two judges from trial- and appellate-level courts throughout Georgia attended the workshop, which focused on issues arising from trademark and copyright disputes. Judge David Carter, U.S. District Court of the Central District of California, and Magistrate Judge Becky Thorson, U.S. District Court of Minnesota, led the workshop, and representatives of the Georgian Copyright Association and the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia, or Sakpatenti, also presented case studies that involved interpreting and applying Georgian law as it relates to copyright and trademarks. This annual program promotes reasoned decision-making and a uniform approach to intellectual property disputes in Georgian courts.

Georgia: CLDP Co-Hosts International Conference Against Counterfeiting and Piracy

On July 18-19, 2019, CLDP partnered with the National Intellectual Property Center of Georgia, or Sakpatenti, to host the fifth annual Georgia Against Counterfeiting and Piracy international conference in Batumi, Georgia. More than 130 participants attended this year’s conference, which is a platform for national and international experts to present developments in the global fight against counterfeiting and piracy. Conference presenters included experts from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center, the World Intellectual Property Organization, and the International Chamber of Commerce Business Action to Stop Counterfeiting and Piracy. This year’s conference focused in part on the interrelation between customs enforcement and the protection of intellectual property rights and included a regional panel of customs experts from Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Ukraine. The program also featured speakers from Georgia’s private and public sector. This annual event enhances public-private dialogue in the fight against counterfeiting in Georgia and the Caucasus region and promotes cooperation and coordination in the enforcement of intellectual property rights.

Afghanistan: Promoting Regional Trade and Economic Growth Workshop

From July 14-17, CLDP conducted a four-day comprehensive program “Facilitating Trade and Promoting Economic Growth” in close coordination with the Afghanistan Ministry of Industry and Commerce and support from Embassies’ Kabul and Tashkent. Approximately 150 representatives from Afghanistan and Uzbekistan’s governments and private sector attended this program. Some of the highlights included sessions on current trade relations between the two countries and opportunities for the private sector in a post-peace settlement environment, as well as a B2B forum that resulted in MOUs and commercial contracts between Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. CLDP also arranged two additional days of GPA, TFA, TIR and SPS-TBT Notifications technical sessions for the participants. CLDP will work with USAID to monitor the progress of the agreements that were signed and also design the next phases of procurement and trade facilitation programming.

Tbilisi, Georgia: CLDP Facilitates Meeting of Central Asia Expert Level Working Group on SPS Measures Focused on Information Availability

On May 13-15, 2019, in Tbilisi, Georgia, CLDP facilitated the eighth meeting of the Expert Level Working Group on Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Measures for officials from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. The group benefited from additional participation by officials from Ukraine and Georgia.

Georgia: Developing Competition in the Pharmaceutical Market

On May 13-15, 2019, CLDP led a workshop on developing competition in Georgia’s pharmaceutical market in Tbilisi, Georgia.  The workshop was planned in cooperation with the Competition Agency of Georgia and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and with the support of the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi.
