CLDP Global Vis Moot Phase Four Virtual or In-Person

CLDP, in collaboration with UNCITRAL and the University of Pittsburgh's Center for International Legal Education (CILE), will support over 20 teams compete in the 29th Annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Moot in Vienna and in the 18th Vis East Moot in April 2021.

MENA Regional –  INSOL International and World Bank Group Virtual Judicial Forum

CLDP, along with INSOL International and the World Bank Group, hosted the second Live Judicial Forum broadcast the next iteration of its live quarterly forums, providing a platform for the judiciary to discuss current issues facing courts and judges in insolvency cases.

MENA Regional –  Empowering Women Entrepreneurs through Business and Legal Strategies in the Technology Era   

From March 22-25, 2021, CLDP organized a 4-day virtual conference on empowering women entrepreneurs from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and Azerbaijan. CLDP worked with several partners to facilitate the sessions, including ITA, USPTO, Tunisia’s Agency for the Promotion of Scientific Research, the Bahrain Businesswomen’s Society, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, the Center of Arab Women for Training and Research, and the Al Tamimi & Co law firm. The conference brought together women entrepreneurs, government officials, and international institutions from Tunisia, Algeria, Bahrain, Kuwait, Morocco, Qatar, and Azerbaijan to discuss legal and business tools available to support women-owned businesses and share success stories. Over 200 participants joined the conference, with an average of 60 participants per session over the course of the four-day program This conference is part of CLDP’s ongoing technical assistance in the region to promote women’s economic empowerment under the Middle Eastern Partnership Initiative of the U.S. Department of State.

Global: CLDP Hosts Pre-Moot on International Commercial Arbitration

On February 21-27, CLDP, in cooperation with the Bahrain Chamber for Dispute Resolution (BCDR) and the University of Pittsburgh Center for International Legal Education, virtually hosted the 11th annual Middle East Vis Pre-Moot. The Pre-Moot is an extensive competition preparing students, lawyers, and law faculty for their participation in the 28th annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot)—the world's premier legal educational program for improving contract resolution through arbitration. The Pre-Moot aims to expand the Vis Moot to underrepresented regions and enhance contract enforcement mechanisms globally. This year, the virtual Pre-Moot brought together over 180 students from 40 teams from the Middle East, Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, North and South America, and Europe and over 200 arbitrators. Tunisia – CLDP Presents at National Conference for Technology Transfer Offices

CLDP, in cooperation with the University of Carthage, is supporting a team of law students representing Tunisia in the 28th Annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot competition.  On January 4, the team worked closely with Vis Moot advisors, law faculty, and CLDP attorneys to complete the second and final required written submission for the competition, due January 28.   Throughout the month of January, the team participated in weekly law lectures, worked closely with advisors, and drafted multiple memorandums.  The competition is an international educational platform used to improve the legal environment for contract enforcement through commercial arbitration.

Global: CLDP Holds Weekly Sessions for Vis Moot Teams

CLDP, in partnership with the Center for International Legal Education (CILE) at the University of Pittsburgh, is holding a legal writing curriculum on for teams competing in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot). The Vis Moot is a global legal competition, established by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, to spur the practice of international commercial arbitration and build the capacity of the next generation of lawyers in the field. The CLDP Vis Pre-Moot program has been implemented annually since 2006 to expand the Vis Moot to countries in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia that are developing their alternative dispute resolution legal capacity. From November 9 to January 22, over 28 teams will work on legal memoranda for the 2020 Vis Moot Problem. CLDP and CILE will support teams by arranging weekly office hours with renowned professors of arbitration as well as weekly live feedback sessions on draft briefs from Vis Advisors, most of whom are former graduates of previous CLDP Vis Pre-Moot Program. Through these virtual consultations, teams will have dedicated support and access to on-demand virtual resources that are critical to their participation and success in the Vis Moot.

Tunisia – CLDP Presents at National Conference for Technology Transfer Offices

On November 4, CLDP, at the request of the Tunisian Agency for the Promotion of Research (ANPR), conducted a webinar for technology transfer stakeholders on strategies for technology commercialization. Participants discussed key commercialization topics for Tunisia such as developing institutional capacity to manage intellectual property assets, seeking patent protection internationally, and determining the value of new technologies. CLDP’s collaboration with ANPR is part of its ongoing technical assistance to Tunisia under the Middle Eastern Partnership Initiative of the U.S. Department of State.

Global: CLDP Provides Virtual Training on Commercial Arbitration for Law Schools - eVis Pre-Moot Training

From October 19-23, CLDP, in partnership with the Center for International Legal Education of the University of Pittsburgh, the Bahrain Chamber for Dispute Resolution, and other regional partners, initiated a week-long legal analysis course for teams from the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. The 28th Annual Middle East Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot) is an UNCITRAL-founded educational platform used to develop the practice of international commercial arbitration by engaging law students, lawyers, judges, and arbitrators in mock trials. With support from CLDP, teams participate in an extensive 9-month program dedicated to ensuring successful competition and representation in the Vis Moot. Following a course on arbitration last month, the teams worked with global advisors through virtual sessions and interactive discussions to develop their respective written submissions for the Vis Moot, while also networking with teams from other law schools to trade tips and resources. The program showcases how to incorporate virtual education, share experiences, and develop best practices on international commercial arbitration.

Global: CLDP and the University of Pittsburgh Kick Start the Virtual Vis Moot Boot Camp

From September 4 to October 2, CLDP, in cooperation with the Center for International Legal Education (CILE) of the University of Pittsburgh College of Law, hosted a Virtual Vis Moot Boot Camp for the incoming 2020-2021 CLDP sponsored teams who will compete in the 28th Annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot).
