West Africa: PPA Handbook Launch and Workshop

On January 20-21, 2015, in Abuja, Nigeria, CLDP held the first in a series of programs to launch the handbook - Understanding Power Purchase Agreements. The handbook which was drafted in early November 2014 (in partnership with the African Legal Support Facility); is intended to provide an overview of PPAs and the obligations, risks and remedies that are found within them.

Workshop on the Annotation of Power Purchase Agreements for Power Africa

In the context of the President’s Power Africa Initiative, CLDP is working with a variety of partners, including the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the African Legal Support Facility (ALSF), the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), the Initiative for Global Development (IGD) and international law firms to develop a library of annotated agreements that form the core of power project transactions.

Regional Workshop on the Practical Approaches to IP Utilization and Protection in Africa

About 170 East, West, and Southern African IP officials, IP practitioners, IP stakeholders, and private sector, from 19 Anglophone and Francophone African countries gathered in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania March 19-21, 2013 to discuss and learn about the practical approaches, successes, challenges and future strategies to the protection and utilization of IP as a facilitator of innvation, entrepreneurship, trade and investment.

CLDP Celebrates 20 years!

Begun as a small joint venture between USAID and Commerce to help the Former Soviet Bloc countries of Eastern Europe transition to more market-oriented economies, CLDP has expanded to help meet the legal technical assistance needs of more than 50 countries in Eurasia, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. On February 23rd, CLDP celebrated 20 years of technical assistance in commercial law.

Developing Regional IP Task Force Coordination Action Plans for Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria and Kenya

CLDP, in collaboration with the Global Intellectual Property Academy (GIPA) of the USPTO, U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), the U.S. State Department (DOS), and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) organized a program from August 1-5, 2011, entitled US Consultations on the Interagency Approach to the Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights for a group of government officials from Ghana, Kenya, Liberia and Nigeria.

Workshops on IP Enforcement

CLDP coordinated with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) a two-day workshop in Abuja, Nigeria, that took place on June 25-26, 2008. The workshop, themed around intellectual property enforcment, received more than 50 participants. It addressed such topics as, the protection of IP Rights as for the music industry in Nigeria and the law enforcement perspective, combating counterfeiting in Nigeria and the threat it poses to citizens health and safety, etc.

Workshop on the Effective Examination of Trademarks

CLDP and the USPTO organized a Workshop on the Effective Examination of Trademarks for approximately 35 Nigerian and Ghanaian trademark examiners. The workshop, held in Abuja, Nigeria, investigated the tools and rationale needed for comprehensive internationally compliant examination of trademark applications.
