Afghanistan: CLDP Hosts a Virtual Assessment on the Status of Health, Safety, and Labor Conditions in Afghanistan

On June 17, CLDP held a virtual meeting with colleagues from the U.S. Department of Labor, and Ahmad-Sharif Jafari, the Director of Health and Safety at the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum (MoMP) in Afghanistan. The purpose of this meeting was to conduct a virtual assessment of the health, safety, and labor conditions in Afghanistan’s mining sector. During the meeting, our colleagues at the U.S. DOL asked a series of questions that they had compiled after reviewing Afghanistan’s most recent Health and Safety Regulations as well as Afghanistan’s Labor Law, both of which CLDP translated from Dari to English for their assessment. Director Jafari was able to answer most of their questions and both sides agreed to follow up with further clarifications. CLDP has been collaborating with the U.S. DOL in an effort to help Afghanistan address concerns from the international community with regards to its labor laws and health and safety standards. The main purpose behind this collaboration is to ensure that Afghanistan continues to benefit from its status under the U.S. Generalized System of Preferences, which eliminates duties on thousands of Afghan products that are imported into the U.S. Prior to the outbreak of the Coronavirus, CLDP had planned to conduct its trade and labor assessment in person in Kabul. However, since travel has been postponed under the current conditions, these assessments have been taking place virtually. This transition has increased CLDP’s capacity to communicate and engage with its counterparts overseas. (Tavaf 240-690-1130, Mallett 202-482-9018.
