The Second Annual Willem C. Vis Middle East International Commercial Arbitration Pre-Moot, in Muscat, Oman, took place February 29-March 1, 2012. The Vis Middle East Pre-Moot is organized by CLDP, the University of Pittsburgh School of Law’s Center for International Legal Education (CILE), and the Bahrain Chamber for Dispute Resolution (BCDR-AAA). Participating teams included the University of Bahrain, Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, United Arab Emirates University, Qatar University, Faculty of Legal, Political and Social Sciences of Tunis, University of Jordan, and University of Baghdad. Legal practitioners from the local, regional and international legal community took part as arbitrators in the Pre-Moot.

The event, which also included two days of oral advocacy training prior to the Vis Pre-Moot, has widely impacted the development of commercial law and arbitration curricula in Middle East law schools and has served as a training ground for the next generation of lawyers.  “I am pleased that the future lawyers and judges of the Gulf have this opportunity to meet so early in their careers.  In short term, they will be the managers of trade and legal affairs in their countries and this early networking and friendly competition will benefit most of them for life,” said US Ambassador to Oman Dr. Richard Schmierer, who attended the Vis Pre-Moot Awards Ceremony.

Since 2006, CLDP and CILE have introduced the Vis Moot in Bahrain, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Jordan and Iraq. With the assistance of BCDR-AAA, CLDP and CILE started the Vis Middle East Pre-Moot in 2011 in order for Middle East Vis Moot teams to gain valuable skills in oral advocacy and practice their arguments prior to the competition in Vienna. The annual Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, held in Vienna, Austria, is the pre-eminent moot on commercial law and arbitration. Teams from over 285 universities and 71 countries take part in the written and oral advocacy competition.

Upcoming Programs

August 1, 2020 - April 30, 2021

Throughout the quarter, CLDP engaged with numerous experts to prepare and record eight separate sessions on trade topics, specifically designed for Afghanistan’s approximately 25 Commercial Attachés posted throughout the world. In May 2018, CLDP spent one week training the same group of Attachés in a comprehensive course designed for them prior to their departure. This updated training course is intended to provide more advanced training on relevant topics now that the Attachés have been serving in their posts for more than two years.  The topics for these presentations were identified based on consultations with the Attachés and relevant stakeholders in the last quarter. Topics include drafting international contracts, attracting foreign direct investment, negotiation strategies, and two sessions on working trade shows. The series of pre-recorded virtual presentations, including translated copies of the presentations, will be delivered on a rolling basis to the Attachés. In addition, future topics will be recorded and shared with the participants. These virtual recordings will be saved in an online repository, which will be available for any interested party to view, including the private sector.

March 15, 2021 - May 24, 2021

CLDP in close collaboration with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) trained Bahrain Innovation and Technology Center (BITC) staff regarding filing patents in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council).  This program was part of a CLDP/USPTO collaboration to conduct over 40 hours of intellectual property training for the BITC.  The program included training on how to obtain patents and copyrights in the US as well as other jurisdictions.
