United Arab Emirates: CLDP kick-starts the 10th Annual Middle East Vis Pre-Moot Program – Phase One

October 20, 2019 - October 22, 2019

On October 20-22, 2019, CLDP will initiate the 10th Annual Middle East Vis Pre-Moot, a multi-phased program aimed to develop the capacity of the arbitration specialist in the emerging markets through preparing law school teams to participate in the Annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot).  The Vis Moot, held in Vienna, Austria, is the pre-eminent moot competition on commercial law and arbitration and is used as an educational tool for arbitrators, judges, lawyers, professors, and law students to foster the study and practice of international commercial and arbitration laws and encourage the resolution of business disputes by arbitration. The Vis Moot provides a comprehensive simulation of a factitious international commercial dispute, and enables participants, both judges, lawyers, and legal scholars alike, to gain technical and legal understanding of the international commercial arbitration process.  During this first phase, CLDP will implement a three-day workshop that introduces the Vis problem and identifies the main issues that the arbitral tribunal will have to weigh. The workshops will also review essential legal rules that will govern the arbitration and moderate a comparative analysis of arbitration rules (institutional and ad hoc) related to the Vis problem. This year’s Phase One academic host and partner is the University of the United Arab Emirates – Al Ain, held in partnership with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the Abu Dhabi Global Markets (ADGM), the Bahrain Chamber for Dispute Resolution (BCDR), and the Center for International Legal Education (CILE) of the University of Pittsburgh.  CLDP will be working with more than 15 teams from more than 8 nations throughout the year, to include UAE, Tunisia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Lebanon, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia.
