El Salvador: CLDP Organizes U.S. Consultation on Textiles

September 16, 2019 - September 19, 2019

From September 16-19, 2019, CLDP, in conjuction with the office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), will organize U.S. Consultations on textiles in St. Louis, Columbia, and Kansas City, Missouri, for a delegation of approximately 25 government officials, industry representatives, and academics from El Salvador.

Salvadoran textile and apparel producers of all sizes struggle with effective design and marketing, which affects their ability to create new business opportunities with U.S. customers. These struggles are further intensified by lack of effective higher education programs in design and marketing in El Salvador. Similarly, apprentice and smaller-scale U.S. designers/entrepreneurs often face challenges finding companies to produce small runs or custom products. Recognizing the mutual benefits of marrying these opportunities, CLDP and USTR will bring together Salvadoran participants with U.S. fashion SMEs and educators, to foster a dialogue that explores trade and education opportunities. In addition, Salvadoran participants will gain an in-depth understanding of how U.S. fashion SMEs are trained and operate their businesses, what challenges they face, and how both parties can collaborate on robust business opportunities. The exchange may also generate an opportunity for sustainability through educational or training opportunities for Salvadoran fashion SMEs and ongoing supply chain relationships.

The U.S. SMEs will showcase the needs and opportunities for small runs, customized production, and crowdsourcing applications while the Salvadoran participants will share their capacity and opportunities to work with the U.S. fashion SMEs. Synergies with local universities will also be highlighted during the visit. Additionally, the visit will foster a dialogue between the participants as the Salvadorans explore the establishment of Salvadoran fashion businesses.
