Afghanistan: SPS Stakeholder Breakout Meetings

July 15, 2020 - August 31, 2020

Throughout the months of July and August, 2020, CLDP, in cooperation with USDA and USAID, hosted a series of breakout teleconferences-meetings focused on sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures in Afghanistan. These teleconferences built on the information gained during the SPS kickoff meeting in early June. The purpose of these breakout sessions was to connect agricultural stakeholders within Afghan Government ministries and the private sector, in order to build dialogue around reducing barriers to trade and identifying opportunities to help Afghanistan meet World Trade Organization SPS Agreement obligations, improve SPS and food safety procedures, and expand agricultural market access in existing and new markets. These breakout sessions also served as an opportunity to examine in detail the issues affecting Afghanistan’s SPS legal and regulatory framework.  CLDP is working with the Afghan government and private sector to improve Afghanistan’s food safety legal and regulatory regimes and to enhance its agricultural trade and commercial activity, increase its employment, and ultimately to contribute to peace in the region.
