Egypt-Capacity Building for Commercial Attaches: Conditions of Success of Joint-ventures between Egyptian and Foreign Firms

September 9, 2020

CLDP will conduct a multi-month program to build the capacity of a group of 14 Egyptian commercial attaches, with a quadruple focus: 1/ Providing knowledge about international trade and the WTO; 2/ Developing skills and knowledge required for increasing Egypt’s exports; 3/  Developing skills and knowledge required for attracting foreign investment into Egypt; 4/ Developing skills and knowledge required for facilitating joint-ventures between Egyptian firms and foreign firms.

Until international travel resumes, this program will be conducted through a series of video-conferences and webinars. The fourth phase of the program will be a webinar that will take place in the first half of September 2020.

The purpose of the webinar will be for CLDP to explain to the Egyptian commercial attaches the conditions of success and causes of failure of joint ventures between Egyptian and foreign firms.

To this end, the webinar will consist of three parts:

Part I: The most experienced of the commercial attaches will be asked to draw upon their experience to share with their colleagues examples of two types of joint ventures between Egyptian firms and foreign firms, joint-ventures in the formation of which they were involved: joint-ventures that were successful; joint-ventures that failed. In each case, they will analyze the key reasons for the outcome.

Part II: Using a methodological tool that it developed, the CLDP team will help the commercial attaches understand what it takes for an international joint-venture to be successful.

Part III: Using a fictional but realistic case study developed by CLDP for Egypt (Strana NGL) CLDP will moderate a discussion on what commercial attaches can do to increase the likelihood of success of joint-venture between an Egyptian firm and a foreign firm.
