Throughout the quarter, CLDP engaged with numerous experts to prepare and record eight separate sessions on trade topics, specifically designed for Afghanistan’s approximately 25 Commercial Attachés posted throughout the world. In May 2018, CLDP spent one week training the same group of Attachés in a comprehensive course designed for them prior to their departure.

CLDP, in partnership with the Center for International Legal Education (CILE) at the University of Pittsburgh, is holding a legal writing curriculum on for teams competing in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot). The Vis Moot is a global legal competition, established by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, to spur the practice of international commercial arbitration and build the capacity of the next generation of lawyers in the field.

January 21, 2021

On January 21, CLDP, in partnership with the United States Trade and Development Agency, will organize a live question and answer webinar on life cycle cost analysis for public-private partnerships (PPPs). The live question and answer session will take place after a pre-recorded webinar is dispersed to CLDP counterparts in Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Before a PPP agreement is reached, governments should perform a life cycle cost analysis of the potential project in order to determine project viability.

CLDP, in close cooperation with USPTO, will conduct a two 2-hour webinar for the Afghanistan TM Directorate on the concept of TM renewals as one of the key elements in the examination of TM applications.

CLDP in partnership with the IPR Center, the IP Task Force, USTR, and USPTO will hold Central Asia Regional Expert Level Working Group on Intellectual Property Rights Webinar on the Interagency Coordination for the Protection and Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights on January 27th, 2021. The Webinar will be a part of a series of virtual and hybrid meetings/workshops that will take place in 2021, culminating in a U.S.

On January 27, CLDP, in partnership with the U.S. Treasury Department, will conduct a webinar on the investment screening mechanism in the United States, Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS).

On January 27, CLDP hosted the Afghanistan Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative Multi-Stakeholder Group (AEITI-MSG) in a virtual meeting to discuss preparation and submission of their 7th Annual Report to the international EITI body. EITI is the global standard that promotes open and accountable management of mineral resources. Afghanistan was recently reinstated into EITI after a brief period of suspension.
