August 1, 2020 - April 30, 2021

Throughout the quarter, CLDP engaged with numerous experts to prepare and record eight separate sessions on trade topics, specifically designed for Afghanistan’s approximately 25 Commercial Attachés posted throughout the world. In May 2018, CLDP spent one week training the same group of Attachés in a comprehensive course designed for them prior to their departure.

March 2, 2021

CLDP presented a report to the Dominican General Directorate for Public Contracting analyzing a draft law to regulate lobbying activities in the Dominican Republic. The report includes observations and recommendations from a leading international expert on lobbying, ethics, and conflict of interest law and references U.S. and international best practices. The report is expected to be shared with relevant stakeholders in the Dominican government, including the Senate and the Presidency.

March 4, 2021

In collaboration with the PPP Authority, CLDP will conduct an introductory workshop on PPP dispute resolution. PPPs are long-term and complex arrangements; it is not possible to foresee every event that may happen and affect a PPP contract. Differences in interpretation and adherence to contract provisions often lead to disputes. Understanding dispute resolution mechanisms and best practices will help workshop attendees resolve disputes quickly and efficiently with minimal project interruption.

On March 4th, CLDP will present at Export Control and Border Security Program (EXBS) two-day online workshop titled Addressing National Security Risks in International Transactions.

March 10, 2021

On March 10, CLDP in coordination with Embassy Baku and the Azerbaijan Justice Academy will hold a two-part webinar on International Arbitration for Judges.  The first webinar series will focus on international treatises such as the New York Convention and the application of such treaties and instruments on cross-border disputes.  The second webinar will focus on the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sales of Goods (CISG), and specifically focusing on the enforcement of arbitral awards.

March 10, 2021

On March 10, CLDP hosted a virtual discussion of Bangladesh’s National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence (AI) with 13 Bangladeshi government and non-government officials. Speakers from the U.S. Department of State and the Brookings Institution provided an overview of the governmental approaches to AI and the Bangladesh National Strategy, and industry experts from Amazon Web Services and Microsoft spoke on how Bangladesh might create a better business environment for growth in AI industries.

March 10, 2021

On March 10th, CLDP will host a webinar in partnership with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Centers for Judicial and Prosecutorial Training in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska, on aspects of criminal IP adjudication including why IP are sometimes prosecuted, and what kinds of IP crimes are prosecuted. 

March 11, 2021

On March 11, 2021, CLDP joined seven other organizations in a virtual launch, founding the newly running Donors Working Group for Agriculture in Afghanistan. This working group aims to serve multiple purposes, including: ensuring that future programs are in line needs, promoting ongoing coordination and more effective use of development funding, and harmonizing the donor communities’ communication with the Afghan Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAIL). The working group will also create and maintain an internal database of all Agriculture-related projects in Afghanistan.

CLDP in close collaboration with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) will train Bahrain Innovation and Technology Center (BITC) staff regarding filing patents in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council).  This program is part of a CLDP/USPTO collaboration to conduct over 40 hours of intellectual property training for the BITC.  The program will include training on how to obtain patents and copyrights in the US as well as other jurisdictions.  

March 15, 2021 - March 19, 2021

On March 15, CLDP will release a pre-recorded webinar on financing documents for a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) to participants in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. PPPs provide an innovative approach to developing major infrastructure projects across the globe; but before a PPP can be implemented, financing needs to be obtained.

March 15, 2021 - March 19, 2021

On March 15-19, 2021, CLDP, in collaboration with USTR and the University of Missouri, will hold a virtual workshop for 20 Salvadoran public, private, and academic representatives of the textiles and apparel sector to build capacities in 4 critical areas. U.S. academic and industry specialists will present to groups of 5, using case studies and focused discussions to resolve specific issues that the Salvadoran representatives face when conducting business with U.S.

March 17, 2021

On March 17, CLDP and Power Africa will host a brainstorming session with experts from the African and U.S. governments, the World Bank, private sector companies, law firms, and academia, in an effort to expand the Understanding series to include a dedicated primer or handbook on energy storage. The session will be joined and lead by Namibian government engineers who have worked with Power Africa’s Southern Africa Energy Program (SEAP).

March 19, 2021 - March 20, 2021

On March 19-20, 2021, CLDP and the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education hosted Iraq’s first International Commercial Arbitration Competition for 5 Iraqi law schools who registered to represent the country in the William C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot later this month in Vienna. The Competition showcased the proficiency of graduating lawyers in the field of international commercial arbitration.

On March 22- April 16, CLDP in cooperation with USAID - Power Africa will host a drafting session on transmission finance. In line with Power Africa’s 2030 goal of generating 7,500 MW of electricity and 5,000 km of transmission lines, the Power Africa Understanding series is being expanded to include a dedicated guidebook on transmission financing.

CLDP, in partnership with Tunisia’s National Agency for the Promotion of Research, will organize a series of webinars on empowering women entrepreneurs from the MENA region and Azerbaijan. The regional conference will bring together women entrepreneurs and innovators, government officials, and international institutions from Tunisia, Algeria, Bahrain, Kuwait, Morocco, Qatar and Azerbaijan to discuss commercial and business tools available to support women-owned technology businesses.

On March 24-26, CLDP, in partnership with the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration and the University of Alexandria, College of Law, will host the 2nd Annual National Arbitration Vis Pre-Moot & Conference with over 30 law students and lawyers from the region. The event is a two-day competition for Egyptian law school teams registered to compete in the Annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot and provides a national platform for future and current arbitration practitioners to advance the practice of international commercial arbitration.

CLDP, along with INSOL International and the World Bank Group, is hosting the second Live Judicial Forum broadcast the next iteration of its live quarterly forums, providing a platform for the judiciary to discuss current issues facing courts and judges in insolvency cases.

CLDP, in coordination with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and Armenia’s State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition (SCPEC) will launch a capacity building webinar program focused on competition and antitrust enforcement. The webinar will incorporate the use of a specific case study on abuse of dominance, in which SCPEC officials will learn about the FTC’s experience in competition enforcement.

On March 30, 2021, CLDP will support USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) in facilitating a virtual seminar for senior level Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAIL) and other Afghan Government (GoA) representatives.  The seminar will provide a venue for awareness raising, and foster dialogue between the MAIL and USG senior officials on Afghanistan’s present and future SPS measures for WTO compliance.
