CLDP Facilitates Delegation's Participation at IGF and Connectivity Consultations

-

From November 9 to 13, 2015, CLDP facilitated attendance by Afghanistan and Pakistan at the 10th annual United Nations Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in João Pessoa, Brazil. The IGF is an annual forum for multi-stakeholder dialogue on the growth and access to the Internet. From Afghanistan, CLDP sponsored the attendance of a deputy minister and another official from the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, the chairman of Afghanistan's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, an official from Afghanistan Telecom, and a representative of a trade association. From Pakistan, CLDP sponsored the head of the regulatory authority.

The objectives of this program were to introduce key high-level stakeholders from both countries to the mainstream of thought and of debate over issues including access, cybersecurity and internet content, to encourage discussion between the attendees and relevant government, industry, and NGO representatives in attendance, and to further Afghanistan-Pakistan relations.

CLDP's pre-conference on the first day provided an overview of the IGF and an opportunity to focus on the issue of connectivity. A senior advisor on technology and internet policy at the United States Department of State made a presentation on the Global Connect Initiative to increase availability of the Internet to billions more people. The participants from Afghanistan and Pakistan held numerous meetings with and spoke at the High Level Leaders Meeting, plenary sessions, and workshops. This program is part of CLDP technical assistance in the information and communications technology sector for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
