On October 4-13, 2016, CLDP conducted a U.S. study tour for a 15-member delegation representing 12 Pakistani universities that are interested in establishing or have early start-up Offices of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORICs). CLDP has been working with Pakistan's Higher Education Commission (HEC), select Pakistani universities, and key private sector stakeholders since 2012 on establishing a university-based innovation and entrepreneurship environment through installation of ORICs on university campuses. This 10-day study tour began in Washington, DC at USPTO's Global Intellectual Property Academy and continued to southeastern Michigan where the delegation visited The University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Wayne State University, and local technology accelerators and business incubators. During these visits, they discussed and observed best practices in the field of intellectual property as it relates to the responsibilities and activities of U.S. universities' technology commercialization offices. In addition, the delegation visited private industry innovation centers to explore the relationship between universities and industry regarding research, innovation, intellectual property rights, and the exploitation of such rights arising from university-industry cooperation.
