Third Annual Middle East Vis Pre-Moot Brings Together Students from Across the Region

The Third Annual Middle East Pre-Moot International Commercial Arbitration Pre-Moot in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, took place February 13-14, 2013. The Vis Middle East Pre-Moot was organized by the Bahrain Chamber for Dispute Resolution (BCDR-AAA) with support from CLDP and the University of Pittsburgh School of Law’s Center for International Legal Education (CILE). This competition brought together students, professors and deans from the University of Bahrain, the University of Baghdad, Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, United Arab Emirates University, Faculty of Legal Political and Social Sciences of Tunis, University of Jordan, and Dar Al Hekma Law College from Saudi Arabia. Legal practitioners from the local, regional and international legal community took place as arbitrators and provided the students with important feedback to help them to continue to improve their arguments for the final competition which will take place in Vienna, Austria on March 23-28, 2013.

CLDP conducted a one day workshop at the Ministry of Legal Affairs (MOLA) addressing arbitration clauses in government contracts - a fundamental topic to lawyers who would be reviewing government contracts.

Bahrain, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Tunisia and Jordan Compete in the Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Austria

After their successful participation in the Second Annual Willem C. Vis Middle East International Commercial Arbitration Pre-Moot, which took place February 27-March 1, 2012 in Oman, teams from Bahrain, Oman, UAE, Qatar, Tunisia, and Jordan traveled to Vienna, Austria in March to compete in the Vis Moot.

Middle East Law Students Successfully Compete in the Vis Pre-Moot Competition

The Second Annual Willem C. Vis Middle East International Commercial Arbitration Pre-Moot, in Muscat, Oman, took place February 29-March 1, 2012. The Vis Middle East Pre-Moot is organized by CLDP, the University of Pittsburgh School of Law’s Center for International Legal Education (CILE), and the Bahrain Chamber for Dispute Resolution (BCDR-AAA). Participating teams included the University of Bahrain, Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, United Arab Emirates University, Qatar University, Faculty of Legal, Political and Social Sciences of Tunis, University of Jordan, and University of Baghdad. Legal practitioners from the local, regional and international legal community took part as arbitrators in the Pre-Moot.

CLDP Celebrates 20 years!

Begun as a small joint venture between USAID and Commerce to help the Former Soviet Bloc countries of Eastern Europe transition to more market-oriented economies, CLDP has expanded to help meet the legal technical assistance needs of more than 50 countries in Eurasia, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. On February 23rd, CLDP celebrated 20 years of technical assistance in commercial law.

U.S.-Omani Customs Cooperation on Advance Rulings Systems

Since the signing of the U.S.-Oman Free Trade Agreement, CLDP has been providing technical assistance to Oman to meet imminent obligations under the FTA.  Under the second phase of a program to support Oman's efforts to develop an Advance Rulings system for customs inquiries,  9 officials from the Royal Omani Police Directorate General of Customs participated in consultations in the U.S. from January 11 - 19, 2012.

Oman Business Registration Consultations

CLDP organized a half-day working session on October 26, 2011 in Muscat, Oman with Omani officials and private sector attorneys to address ongoing difficulties facing U.S. and other foreign firms attempting to establish branch offices and subsidiaries in the Sultanate of Oman.
