Regional Workshop on the Practical Approaches to IP Utilization and Protection in Africa

About 170 East, West, and Southern African IP officials, IP practitioners, IP stakeholders, and private sector, from 19 Anglophone and Francophone African countries gathered in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania March 19-21, 2013 to discuss and learn about the practical approaches, successes, challenges and future strategies to the protection and utilization of IP as a facilitator of innvation, entrepreneurship, trade and investment.

CLDP Celebrates 20 years!

Begun as a small joint venture between USAID and Commerce to help the Former Soviet Bloc countries of Eastern Europe transition to more market-oriented economies, CLDP has expanded to help meet the legal technical assistance needs of more than 50 countries in Eurasia, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. On February 23rd, CLDP celebrated 20 years of technical assistance in commercial law.

The Role of the Judiciary in the Protection and Enforcement of Intellectual Property in East Africa

CLDP led a three-day workshop in Kigali, Rwanda, June 6-8, 2011, focusing on the judiciary’s role in promoting intellectual property rights (IPR) protection and enforcement throughout the East African region.  The outcome of this workshop resulted in a series of recommendations for the East African Community members regarding access to legal protection for everyone; sharing judicial opinions in IP cases throughout the region; consistently reviewing and revising each country’s IP statutory framework to ensure that it addresses issues raised by current technologies and deters the most contemporary threats; promoting awareness of IP laws and interest in partnering for the upcoming Africa IP Summit to be held in South Africa in the spring of 2012.
