On August 23-25, 2019, in Male, Maldives, CLDP led workshops for Sri Lankan and Maldivian judges on mediation and arbitration. The event highlighted the importance of joining and implementing both the New York and Singapore conventions. Both countries have nascent Alternative Dispute Resolution centers that are starting to build a culture of confidence for settling disputes outside of traditional courts. Chief Counsel Gardner’s visit included meetings with the Speaker of the Parliament, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and the Attorney General, as well as the inaugural team of law students from the national university that will compete in the annual Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot competition throughout the year.
