Anti-corruption Initiatives in the Field of Business: New Legislation of Ukraine and Recommendations on its Application Based on International Experience

-

CLDP in cooperation with Corporate Governance Professional Association (CGPA) and the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE) supported a workshop on Anti-corruption Initiatives in the Field of Business: New Ukrainian Legislation and Recommendations for its Application Based on the International Experience, which took place in Uzhgorod in December 2016. The workshop aimed to use Ukraine’s new anti-corruption laws to educate both government officials and business representatives about how they can contribute to an overall reduction in corruption.

The workshop aimed at strengthening the culture of anti-corruption compliance and increasing awareness of corruption risks among Ukrainian SMEs; as well as improving government officials’ understanding of SMEs’ anti-corruption obligations under new Ukrainian regulations. The workshop also aimed at increasing the understanding of the mechanisms of combating corruption, showing the benefits of strict adherence to international anti-corruption standards as an alternative to the "benefits" of corrupt practices; and helping medium-size Ukrainian companies meet the requirements of Chapter X of the Law of Ukraine, On the Prevention of Corruption.

The workshop produced a specific compendium of data and presentations about anti-corruption compliance issues that government officials and business representatives can use in their future business counseling functions. Further, a large number of Ukrainian companies had direct access to these presentations and consultations, which will help them to meet the requirements of Ukrainian laws mandating the development and implementation of anti-corruption programs.  Government officials also gained information about these issues, understanding what kind of activities are usually included into such programs, how they work, and what specific benefits may be obtained by companies that have clean reputations.
