Burma: CLDP to Conduct Joint Workshop with USAID on Drafting Public Procurement Law

-

On May 27-29, CLDP and USAID held a workshop with the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of National Planning and Development and the Attorney-General’s office on drafting a public procurement law. This workshop built off of a previous work that CLDP co-hosted on public procurement last July. The workshop focused on best practices in procurement and the policy considerations for drafting a procurement law. Burma does not yet have a public procurement law. The current framework for procurement comes from presidential directives that are decreed on an adhoc basis. The Ministry of Finance and Ministry of National Planning and Development recently formed a committee to draft a law under the guidance of the World Bank, but to-date there has been no activity. Institutionalizing best practices in public procurement will help to promote transparency in governance, particularly as Burma looks to invest in updating infrastructure around the country.
