On September 12-16, CLDP conducted a week-long regional workshop on Cross Border Management in Ho Chi Minh City in partnership with the General Department of Vietnam Customs and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The workshop was funded by the State Department through the Lower Mekong Initiative and included participants from Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The workshop focused on trade facilitation, cross-border management, supply chains and coordination between countries in the region in order to improve transparency and efficiency of trade. The program also focused on designing a comprehensive training program for customs and border officials to improve accountability. Improving efficiency and transparency is a priority in the region for compliance with the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement and the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Experts from ITA, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the World Customs Organization joined the workshop. CLDP Chief Counsel Stephen Gardner provided opening remarks for the workshop that included a site visit to Intel where the group learned more about how the best companies interact with customs services to meet their business needs.
