Consumer Protection Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Capacity Building in Egypt

-

The Egyptian Consumer Protection Agency (ECPA) is a public, independent legal entity under the political aegis of the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI). The ECPA was created by The Consumer Protection Law (Law 67/2006) and Executive Regulations in August 2006. While fairly nascent, the ECPA has overseen many firsts for Egypt. The ECPA is the first governmental agency with officials from NGOs on its Board of Directors; it has overseen the first product recall in Egypt; and it has created a call center with an effective hotline for consumer complaints. On October 10th and 11th, 2010 in Cairo and October 13th and 14th in Luxor, CLDP advised and supported two day conferences that included the Egyptian Consumer Protection Agency and Egyptian NGO leadership and staff in the region. Attendees discussed effective media campaigns, grant-writing and other activities for sustainable development of the NGO, shared tactics for effective community outreach in consumer protection, gave both the ECPA and NGOs opportunities for mutual cooperation, and connected umbrella NGOs with regional NGOs to maximize the resources of both.
