From August 1-5, CLDP, in cooperation with USAID and United Nation's Environmental Program (UNEP) held a roundtable discussion with Egyptian officials on how to develop and implement Sustainable Public Procurement (SPP, also known as Green Procurement) practices per Egypt’s National Sustainable Development Plans and commitments to the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals. UNEP is the UN’s global custodian agency in charge of supporting countries employ sustainable public procurement (SPP) practices, a critical indicator of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDP) adopted by Egypt in 2015, per the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (noted as indicator 12.7.1). In May, CLDP and UNEP recently conducted meetings with Egyptian Government Officials on the sidelines of the Special Presidential Envoy for Climate’s (SPEC) participation in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Green Tech Trade Mission in May of 2022. Nearly a month after the meetings and Trade Mission, the Government of Egypt commits to confirming a new officer to coordinate SPP data collection with UNEP. UNEP SPP reporting is the main mechanism to gauge country commitments to meeting SDG goals. To facilitate additional support to Egypt’s efforts to combat climate change, via SPP, CLDP and UNEP will expand its technical assistance to support Egypt implement SPP practices.
