On December 7-8, 2019, in Telavi, Georgia, CLDP, in collaboration with the Georgian Association of Arbitrators, held a two-day roundtable to promote arbitration in Georgia. Twenty-six stakeholders attended the roundtable, including members of the Georgian judiciary, Georgian government officials, and representatives from the business and arbitration communities. The roundtable provided a forum to discuss the steps necessary to engender increased awareness and trust in arbitration as a viable means for effectively resolving commercial disputes. At the end of the roundtable, the stakeholders developed a set of proposals to change the legal structure and to enhance the professionalism and qualification of Georgian arbitrators. The lack of effective and efficient mechanisms for commercial dispute resolution remains an impediment to economic growth in Georgia. The expanded use of arbitration in Georgia can help to resolve challenges in the formal legal system by providing access to an alternative form of dispute resolution.
