In the past year, CLDP brought together African governments, international finance institutions, leading law firms and extant and potential power project developers to draft the Understanding Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) handbook. The intent of the handbook was to capture input from African and international stakeholders and identify what makes for a bankable PPA.  Over ten thousand copies of the handbook have been distributed and launch events have been held in the US, South Africa, Nigeria and Tanzania.

The conversation with African stakeholders about best practices for power project development has now turned to the issue of continuing challenges in arranging private financing for power projects and the important role of African governments in catalyzing investment through sovereign credit support. As a response to this concern, CLDP is now coordinating the drafting of a second companion handbook that will focus exclusively on power project financing and the best practices for private financing of power projects in the African market.
