On May 11, CLDP, in collaboration with the U.N. Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), conducted an introductory webinar on the Maldives Electronic Transactions Act that recently passed. CLDP held this webinar as a response to a direct request for technical assistance from the Minister of State. In attendance, in addition to the Minister, were eight officials from the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology. An expert from UNCITRAL reviewed the provisions of the law and focused on identifying where implementing regulations are needed. This was the first stage of planned assistance on the new law, which provides a legal basis for commercial and government agreements conducted through electronic signatures. This law will encourage greater use of electronic means of conducting public and private sector transactions. This program was conducted as part of CLDP’s activities under the Digital Connectivity and Cybersecurity Partnership initiative for South Asia.
