On September 3, 2019, in Bamako, Mali, CLDP led a one-day meeting to build consensus among public and private sector stakeholders on an upcoming communication campaign aiming to prevent the use of counterfeits. This effort is part of a Mali-wide project with the U.S. Agency for International Development mission in Bamako to implement innovative solutions for combating counterfeiting of products affecting public health, with a focus on agro-inputs. CLDP works with Feed the Future and the Government of Mali to implement best practices in the prevention of the movement and use of agricultural products and to raise public awareness of the dangers of fake products. This has been done through the extensive training of enforcement authorities including Malian Customs, the judiciary, police, and gendarmerie, as well as consumer education. It has also included the introduction of Mobile Product Authentication (MPA™) technology at the point of purchase through private/public partnerships. The new phase of the project builds upon notable improvement of the understanding of the impact of counterfeits by Malian stakeholders, including spurring the creation of a national database administered jointly by Malian Customs, the Malian Intellectual Property Office (CEMAPI) and the Malian Copyright Office (BUMDA) where producers and importers can register marks to facilitate the seizure of counterfeited products. CLDP is preparing to launch a national campaign, including culturally appropriate marketing material, through billboards, radio, and television, in coordination with local partners, raising awareness of the danger of counterfeits and showcasing new technologies to best combat it.
