From August 27-October 5, CLDP sponsored a delegation of 12 industrial safety inspectors to participate in a six-week session at the OSHA Training Institute. Organized at the request of the Iraqi Ministry of Industry and Minerals, the training introduced the participants to international health and safety standards primarily in the areas of construction and manufacturing.

This training is part of a multi-phase program to help develop Iraq's industrial sector which is critical to address Iraq's unemployment problems and diversify Iraq's oil-based economy. The program aims to help Iraqi state owned enterprises form partnerships with foreign firms, bringing new technology and manufacturing opportunities to Iraq's economy. In order for these partnerships to succeed, the state owned enterprises will need to give assurance that Iraq's safety and health procedures are compliant with international standards.
