CLDP Leads Regional Conference on Countering Counterfeit Products in the Maghreb

CLDP organized a two-day conference in Rabat, Morocco to address the scope of the challenges and the role of regulatory agencies in combating the trade in counterfeit products, including medicines and other health-related products, in the Maghreb. The conference focused on improving the skills, knowledge and cooperation ofofficials involved in IP enforcement, including customs officials and prosecutors from Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia. At the end of the conference, the five delegations adopted a five-point manifesto to improve their regional coordination and better share best practices among their respective agencies in an area which is seeing increasing quantities of counterfeit products and being targeted as a jumping off point to Europe and the United States.

The training was held with the participation of the International Institute of Research Against Counterfeit Medicines (IRACM), French Customs, the French National Institute for Industrial Property (INPI), the U.S. National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center (IPR Center) the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the World Customs Organization (WCO).

CLDP provides technical assistance to the Governments of Algeria, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia through the U.S. Department of State - Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). As part of this program, CLDP works with key institutions and stakeholders in these countries to assist in the development of laws, regulations, and practices that facilitate trade and economic diversification, including the protection of intellectual property rights.
