From April 23-27, 2018 CLDP, in cooperation with U.S. Embassy Pristina and the U.S. Department of Commerce’ International Trade Administration (ITA), conducted US Consultations for mining for a high-level delegation from the Kosovo government in Washington, DC. The consultations and study tour were a direct response to recent developments within Kosovo to discuss strategies to attract foreign investment to its mining industry, specifically focusing on the new mine to be developed alongside Kosovo e Re power plant.  The program addressed two objectives: first, Kosovar delegates met with U.S. mining companies to discuss the challenges and solutions with respect to the global mining market; and second, CLDP experts addressed the benefits of private-public partnerships (PPPs) to Kosovo’s mining industry. While the power plant exists as the largest private-sector investment in Kosovo’s history, financing and development of the new mine will be a central component of reaching financial close for the entirety of the project.  During discussions, CLDP experts discussed the various costs and risks that need to be addressed by the Government of Kosovo (GOK) as it considers next steps for the development of the new mine.  CLDP consultations also included site visits to Morgantown, West Virginia to view modernized mining equipment, open-pit mines, and explored new technology and curriculum currently being developed at West Virginia University.
