On August 6, CLDP, in collaboration with the Nepal Renewable Energy Program (NREP) and the Renewable Energy Confederation of Nepal, conducted a webinar on project finance for local Nepalese financial institutions. Nepal is working to increase domestic and foreign investment at the sub-national level for infrastructure, with a particular focus on the energy sector. Nepal is heavily reliant on hydro-power for its energy and is needing to diversify its energy resources due to climate change. The webinar highlighted the basic concepts of project finance and provided an overview of risks that lenders might face throughout a project finance transaction. During the webinar, local counterparts shared their experiences and lessons learned as lenders in Nepali project financing transactions. CLDP’s collaboration with NREP is part of its on-going technical assistance under the Infrastructure Transaction and Assistance Network (ITAN). CLDP has been working with the Nepalese government at the national level since 2018 on developing and implementing bankable infrastructure projects. Recent Nepalese legislation has also allowed local and regional authorities to procure infrastructure projects under a public-private model. CLDP anticipates that future engagements will focus on assisting local and regional authorities in structuring bankable infrastructure agreements.
