CLDP sponsored a weeklong visit of five influential Kyrgyz handicrafts producers and the Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce in Kyrgyzstan to the U.S. The Kyrgyz delegation participated in the Aid to Artisans (ATA) Market Readiness Program at the biannual New York International Gift Fair, which is one of the largest venues for handicrafts producers and wholesalers, featuring over 3000 artisans from all over the world. ATA's Market Readiness Program was a five-day comprehensive course offering the latest trend and market information delivered by industry experts. As part of the ATA program assessment, the group received invaluable advice on moving from a niche market in national souvenirs to designing for the U.S. marketplace. The concepts learned by the delegates will increase the marketability and sales potential for local artisans and businesses in Kyrgyzstan. The training also provided members of the Kyrgyz crafts sector with the fundamental skills needed to form international business relationships to create long term and sustainable income for handicrafts producers and retailers.
