Anti-corruption Work in Egypt

-
Egypt’s new democracy presents a golden opportunity for partnership in setting new standards for conduct.

CLDP Chief Counsel Stephen Gardner was joined by Assistant General Counsel for Administration Barbara Fredericks and Labor and Employment Law Division Deputy Chief John Guenther for meetings in Egypt the week of May 14th. CLDP continued its work with the Egyptian Government to bring more transparency, integrity and ethical conduct into the operations of its ministries. Egypt’s new democracy presents a golden opportunity for partnership in setting new standards for conduct and informing the public about reforms that will make government operations more service-oriented and transparent. CLDP built on a previous anti-corruption program it sponsored last year by creating pilot projects with the Egyptian Trademark Office and the Egyptian Customs Authority to review ethics and conduct codes and to share expertise about how to get the best work out of Egyptian civil servants. CLDP plans to engage the Egyptian Government closely on these issues by bringing the vast expertise of Department of Commerce attorneys to provide guidance on draft regulations, deliver training to civil servants throughout the country and serve as counselors to senior Egyptian officials that are trying to create more functional, dependable government services. These efforts should have a lasting impact in helping to achieve the objectives set out by the G8 and the Obama Administration under the Deauville Partnership with Arab Countries in Transition.
