-
Panelists identify areas in Egyptian market impacted by influx of counterfeits

CLDP, jointly with the Egyptian Consumer Protection Agency (ECPA), hosted a 2-day conference and workshops to raise consumer awareness as to the safety concerns associated with counterfeit goods. The program, held in Cairo, Egypt, featured panelists from the World Customs Organization (WCO), the International Chambers of Commerce (ICC), and the regional Brand Protection Group (BPG). Over 200 participants, including law enforcement and customs officials, trademark owners, and civil society, gathered in Cairo to raise awareness as to the consumer safety concerns associated with the use of counterfeit goods. Panelists identified sector areas in the Egyptian market impacted by an influx of counterfeit goods, discussed potential reforms to the current legal framework, and shared methods for helping consumers identify counterfeit goods. The Anti-counterfeiting and Piracy Global Coordinator for the WCO spoke to the dangers posed to consumers by counterfeit goods and the unique challenges faced by law enforcement in the region. The ICC’s initiative “Business Action to Stop Counterfeiting and Piracy” (ICC BASCAP) and a Microsoft representative introduced the BASCAP “Intellectual Property Guidelines for Businesses,” practical steps that businesses can take to protect their creativity and innovation in intellectual property-based products. The conference was followed by a one-day workshop showcasing plans for future developments in Egyptian internal trade surveillance. Also at the workshop, local and international business and civil society members discussed with Egyptian Government representatives opportunities for increased cooperation in public and private anti-counterfeiting enforcement efforts, and shared brand protection measures and methods for raising awareness among consumers.
