On May 7-12, CLDP and USAID jointly hosted workshops on Consumer Protection in Yangon and Mandalay, Burma. The concept of consumer protection is new to Burma; parliament just passed a new consumer protection law last year. Under that law, the Ministry of Commerce has begun to set up regional consumer protection bureaus in Yangon and Mandalay. During the roadshow, CLDP and USAID held technical meetings with the regional bureaus to address regulating consumer products effectively and providing appropriate redress for consumers. Stakeholders from the Burmese government, NGOs and local businesses actively participated. Following the roadshow, CLDP and USAID experts met with the Ministry of Commerce in Naypidaw to discuss technical implementation of the new consumer protection law and establishing regional consumer protection committees. They also met with the Supreme Court to discuss adjudication of consumer protection and bankruptcy law. CLDP and USAID will further support the implementation of the Consumer Protection law with additional technical meetings and public workshops in August.
