CLDP Assists United Arab Emirates University in adding the Willem C. Vis Commercial Arbitration Moot to Curriculum

Preparation for the Willem C. Vis Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition

CLDP, together with the University of Pittsburgh's Center for International Legal Education (CILE), prepared faculty advisors and selected students to participate in the Willem C. Vis Commercial Arbitration Moot Competition in Vienna, Austria in March 2010. The Vis Commercial Arbitration Moot team, which will likely become a permanent part of the curriculum of UAE University, is the third such team on the Arabian Peninsula to begin participating in the moot, following the University of Bahrain and Sultan Qaboos University in Oman. In February 2010, all three Gulf region teams met at UAE University - Al Ain for pre-moot practice arguments with the assistance of University of Pittsburgh Professor Ronald Brand and three student coaches, Kerry Ann Stare, Rick Grubb, and Marc Coda. CLDP's efforts in this area have helped students and faculty members became intimately familiar with complex aspects of commercial arbitration by fostering practical skills development in both written and oral advocacy. Tentatively, CLDP aims to continue this process by including the University of Kuwait in 2011, building on the positive experiences for both the faculty and students in Bahrain, Oman, and the UAE.
