October 10-12, 2018, in Chisinau, Moldova, CLDP facilitated the sixth meeting of the Expert Level Working Group on Customs (the Group) for officials from Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The Group heard and discussed presentations from U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, and the Moldovan Ministry of Economy and Customs Services regarding inter-agency border cooperation and applicable provisions of the WTO's Trade Facilitation Agreement. The Moldovan Customs Service drew on its similarities as a land-locked, former Soviet state to present the customs reforms in Moldova which have helped the most in meeting the countries' shared challenges. The Group also visited two border crossing points on the Moldovan-Ukraine border to observe and learn about the innovative joint customs control procedures adopted there. Developing the capacity of Central Asia officials to understand and implement best international practices will assist the countries of Central Asia to facilitate border crossings, increase regulatory transparency, and provide greater market access
