CLDP Leads Training on Bankruptcy Adjudication for BiH Judges

-

From June 14-15, in coordination with the Centers for Judicial and Prosecutorial Training of the Republika Srpska (RS) and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH), CLDP conducted a workshop on bankruptcy adjudication in Vlašić, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Participants included 29 judges from both the RS and the FBiH (the two government entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina) as well as three representatives of the banking sector. The workshop aimed to increase the capacity of judges to effectively adjudicate international commercial disputes, specifically in bankruptcy and secured lending cases, in order to produce the predictable and uniform decisions necessary to attract foreign investment and encourage entrepreneurship.

During the workshop, Chief Judge Michael Williamson of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court of the Middle District of Florida and Professor Don De Amicis of Georgetown University Law Center presented international best practices in bankruptcy and secured lending, including U.S. bankruptcy code and UNCITRAL standards, and led highly productive discussions of current issues facing judges in both entities. This event was part of a series of workshops intended to build the capacity of the judiciary in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The next training, scheduled for September 2017, will focus on international sales contracts and arbitration. CLDP also learned this week that it will receive increased funding  in 2017 for Bosnia and Herzegovina, in order to expand assistance into the areas of trade facilitation and government procurement.
