On December 9-10, 2019, in Tbilisi, Georgia, CLDP, in collaboration with the Georgian Association of Arbitrators, conducted a two-day workshop on international best practices in commercial arbitration. The capacity-building workshop highlighted the ethical rules relating to service as an arbitrator, including the arbitrator’s role in guaranteeing procedural fairness and ensuring that parties adhere to ethical behavior. The program also brought participants up to date on international best practices, including those related to enforcement of arbitration agreements and arbitral awards. Through interactive exercises, participants also practiced navigating the procedural and ethical issues that arise during the arbitration process. This workshop enhanced the participants’ ability to arbitrate complex commercial disputes and promoted a commitment to ethical standards. If arbitration is to reach its full potential as a mechanism to resolve commercial disputes in Georgia, arbitrators must not only be competent but must also be committed to preserving fairness, integrity, confidentiality, and neutrality during arbitration.
