As an extension of CLDP technology transfer programming conducted in 2012, CLDP conducted one-day intellectual Property (IP) education and public awareness seminars in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi in September, 2013. The events were conducted at a Pakistani university in each city for faculty and students that were interested in IP rights and technology transfer. The speakers, including a Federal Judge, USPTO attorney and private sector IP attorneys, covered patents, copyrights, trademarks and the economic benefits of recognition and enforcement of IP rights. On the margins, CLDP experts participated in a ½ day IPR roundtable organized by the US Embassy in Islamabad. This roundtable included stakeholders that played a role in implementing the Pakistan’s new IPO Act and in particular, special tribunals to hear IP cases. Finally, CLDP experts met with Pakistani judges at the Supreme Court’s Federal Judicial Academy in Islamabad and also the Karachi High Court to discuss implementation of the IPO Act and the special tribunals. The programs and meetings, together with continued CLDP technology transfer programming, will contribute to USG efforts to improve the IP regime in Pakistan.
