From September 7 to 8, CLDP held a workshop that brought together telecommunications representatives from the Caribbean nations of Jamaica, Grenada, Trinidad and Tobago, Saint Lucia, Barbados, and the Bahamas on the importance of security in wireless communications networks and how best to deploy broadband connectivity to underserved communities at affordable rates. The first day of the workshop focused on best practices in broadband mapping, including examples of how to collect and visualize broadband data such as utilizing geographic information systems mapping software. The second day focused on how partner countries can ban the use of unsafe vendor equipment and included roadmaps and examples from the Federal Communications Commission and the Bureau of Industry Security. The workshop provided a venue for Caribbean countries to discuss and share information and to learn more about what they can do to ensure safe, resilient, and stable networks in their respective countries. The workshop also hosted USTDA in a grant signing ceremony with the government of Jamaica to provide ongoing support to modernize its emergency communications system and network of public service answering points.
