From December 5 – 6, 2022, CLDP, together with the U.S. Embassy, held a two day workshop in Nairobi for 25 officials from the Kenyan Communications Authority (CA) as well as representatives from local providers. The workshop, entitled, Next Generation Wireless Communications: New Opportunities in 5G and Beyond, began by providing an overview of 5G, including 5G finance, new technologies in 5G, and a panel discussion on how governments may support 5G and supplier diversity. Day 2 discussed the practical application of 5G in the Kenyan context, including discussions with mobile operators from the region, a discussion of Open RAN in Africa, specifically, and sessions covering the practical application of 5G, including challenges, solutions, and examples of deployment.  The workshop was initiated by opening remarks and commentary from CA Director General, Ezra Chiloba. The activity fell under the Digital Connectivity and Cybersecurity Partnership and served to strengthen coordination between the United States and Kenya on technological innovation, 5G, and securing critical technology infrastructure
