On June 15-16, 2021, CLDP hosted the fourth meeting of the Western Balkans Trade Facilitation Working Group. Utilizing the expertise of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the meeting focused on regional and international best practices in post-clearance audits and risk analysis. CBP experts also discussed challenges and experiences of shifting auditing procedures online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the participating countries, including Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, and North Macedonia, continue to see high rates of COVID-19 transmission but have not yet been able to shift customs procedures online. Participants also discussed interagency and intra-customs coordination for leveraging existing resources when making audit selection decisions. This working group is part of an effort to encourage harmonization and coordination of regional customs processes to improve the time it takes for goods to cross borders, thereby maximizing the region’s economic potential as a collective trade hub.
