UAE Judicial Training Consultations

From June 17-28, CLDP, in partnership with the UAE Ministry of Justice, conducted judicial training consultations in Washington, DC and New York, NY for a group of UAE judges. The judges attended consultations, court hearings, and personal sessions with US federal judges and officials at judicial venues including the Federal Judicial Center, Administrative Office of the US Courts, US Supreme Court, Southern District of New York, as well as a variety of institutions such as the Federal Trade Commission, US Patent and Trade Office, New York University, the World Bank, and the International Finance Corporation. The consultations addressed topics associated with recent CLDP programming in the UAE, including enforcement of intellectual property rights (IPR) and the development of new UAE commercial laws such as insolvency and arbitration laws. Additionally, the program provided practical training in the administration of cases, the structure of a federal court system, and continuing legal education for judges. 
The two week program familiarized the UAE judges with international standards and the tools needed to fairly and expeditiously adjudicate cases related to IPR, insolvency, and other commercial areas to help provide greater incentives for local entrepreneurship and innovation, and to attract and protect foreign investors. The group’s attendance at actual court hearings and interfacing directly with US district and federal court judges will help the participants to better administrate cases, leading to a more efficient judicial system in the UAE. Such capacity-building will promote US-UAE business opportunities.
