On November 20, CLDP and the U.S. Foreign Commercial Service met with high-level officials from the Palestinian Attorney General’s Office and the Higher Judicial Council to determine next steps for CLDP’s technical assistance on intellectual property (IP) in the West Bank. During the meeting, the Palestinian officials expressed the need to focus on trademark law, given its nexus with competition and franchising, two other areas of CLDP assistance in the West Bank. CLDP agreed to implement, in the coming year, a workshop for judges and prosecutors on the calculation of monetary damages for civil and criminal penalties within international standards for trademark disputes. CLDP’s IP work comes at a critical time, as the Palestinian Authority is in the midst of passing a new IP law that will replace the current law that dates back to 1933.
